It's a parking lot.
Not kidding.

Hello. I'm Doug.

new photo

I'm a writer based in Minneapolis and the author of Europe on Five Wrong Turns a Day (Perigee Books/Penguin, 2012), a travel memoir about my attempt to tour Europe guided only by a 1963 copy of Europe on Five Dollars a Day.

This blog has its roots in that trip, and if you dig back through the 2009 archives, you can find my posts from the road. Most things I post here have to do with the travel, history, and topics related to that trip. Also food, architecture/design, and the eternal quest to find the Ideal Chocolate Croissant (tips welcome). Among other things.

For more info about me or the book, click on one of the buttons at the top of the page.

FAQ

... and frequently sarcastic answers. Click here.

Most popular question:

Q: So where are you traveling in Europe right now?

A: Alas, I'm back from the trip, though this blog lives on. To read my dispatches from the road, click here. To learn more about the trip and the book I wrote about it, visit the main project web site. But for the full story, you'll have to wait for the book. Spring! 2012!

Keep in touch

Long live the handwritten letter!
I'm on a mission to keep handwritten letters, postcards, and aerograms alive. Write to me! I'll write back--and I might even add it to my online postcard gallery, a newfangled salute to old-fashioned correspondence.
